Why Did the Buffalo Cross the Road?

Last weekend I went to the Tallgrass National Prairie. It’s basically land in the middle of nowhere to yes, exactly, preserve the prairie. There is not much of the prairie left as the settlers knew it. A book I read in high school described it as a sea of tall grass. And like a sea it went on and on. So this is to keep a piece of history intact.

The main attraction for me was the buffalo. There are a couple of bison herds roaming freely around their section of this prairie. Obviously, there are some fences nowadays. But when you’re inside with the buffalo it’s a grand experience. At this point I should say that you don’t run up and take a selfie with a wild, 2-ton buffalo. It’s not a smart thing to do. But you can watch them and take their pictures from a safe distance.

The buffalo were wandering about 30 yards or more off the path. They just watched me at first and then didn’t care about me. I walked on a little ways further to see some more and 3 of them crossed the road where I had been. They would be gone when I was ready to go. I was sure of that. I spent a lot of time there just taking pictures and watching the buffalo roam.

Then I decided to head back to the visitor center and my car. But I had to wait for the buffalo to cross the road. What were they looking for? Greener grass? Their buffalo buddy? We’ll never know. But finally after exercising patience, I made it back to the car.

I wondered if that wasn’t just like us. What are we looking for? A different job, a better place to live? Those are all good things. First and foremost we should be looking at what’s most important. That’s Jesus. Meeting Him would be worth crossing the road!
