As I was driving back from the coast the other day, I was searching for a radio station. Yes, I am one of those strange people who still listen to the radio without the satellite. As I searched, I came across a station playing some old 80’s songs. One of them was Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.” I don’t know if you are familiar with the song or not but here is the just of it. A couple is working hard to make a living but they have each other. And so the title, “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
Hearing it this time several things struck me about the lyrics. First, are all Christians poor? Living on a prayer means one is basically broke or just barely making ends meet. If Christians are poor, why is that? God only will save poor people? I don’t think it matters if you are rich or poor. I think what matters is what you do with what God gives you. All that comes down to where your heart is at. Is it here in this world or is it with Jesus?
Certainly, Christians are rich in many ways besides money too. God bestows many blessings but not all of them are monetary. Let God use you in His way and for His purpose and I am sure you will see many blessings and gifts from God.
Now the other thing about this song is the main line itself: Livin’ on a Prayer. Isn’t that what we all should be doing? Living in communication with God? If God blesses us should we stop praying? The more He blesses us, I think, the more we should be talking to Him. Not only when I am poor, but also when I am rich. Not only when I am sick, but when I am healthy too. Anytime and every time is time to speak with God.
It doesn’t make a difference if you have little or have much. Each of us every day should be livin’ on a prayer. Each of us every day should be communicating with Jesus, the one who saves us. Each of us every day should let Jesus into our hearts. Let Him change your life. Let each of us every day be livin’ on a prayer!
